A groundbreaking ceremony was held in mid-September for a 144-unit apartment complex going up on the west side of Pecos.
Work on the site actually began in mid-summer, but the official ceremony for Newsome Development’s Pecos Apartment complex was held on Sept. 19 at the site, located on Arizona Street south of Stafford Boulevard. Work on the buildings is expected to take about a year.
“We should be done at the end of the summer, or September (2020)” said Bill Newsome.
“It’s a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments,” said John Almeida, who is overseeing the work. The three-story buildings will have 24 units each in six buildings.
“It will house nearly 300 people,” Newsome added.
Almeida said each unit will have its own washers at driers. “There will be a clubhouse with kind of an entertainment area and so forth, as well as a splash pad out back, and some green space for recreation,” he said.
Pavilion Construction is handling the on-site work. The project took several years to begin because of requirements by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development, which provided some of the funding for Newsome. The apartments will not have income limitation mandates, as other HUD-funded apartment complexes built in Pecos in recent years have imposed.
